Gender equality

Current Statistics in New Zealand

Women more likely to gain custody of children.

This is also seen outside of New Zealand. For example with the break up of Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards, full custody was given to the mother.

10% Pay gap between men and women a sod June 2013.

This is seen particular in the design world.
Overall Women earned $8000 to $20000 less then men in creative, digital, and marketing jobs.

This is despite women holding more creative degrees over men, as well as the likelihood of having a higher degree.

Over 51% of artists in the Us are women
61% of Bachelors Degreen in Fine Arts go to women.

Ideology

Boys are in calculates with values about being good with their hands, about the work ethic, about being strong, being tough, and competitive, about being provider.

Hollywood presents this idea over and over agin in television.

Superman is strong and tough. Many boys growing up aspire to be like superman. Boys often dress up as super man, as well as participating in imaginary games where the boy plays a strong and tough role.

Women are in calculated with values about being maternal, nurturing, looking after children, and keeping the home.

Agin this ideology is presented in Hollywood.

It is not very common for the women to be seen as the protagonist, for example Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

Feminism

Marie Curie is an important cultural figure.

Marie Curie won two Nobel prizes, the Davy medal, and the Matteucci medal. However she was not allowed to vote.

After the war, women were in competition with men trying to find work.
In the 1960s women fought to be treated equally and fairly.

Feminism today.

Miley Cyrus told BBC Radios !'s News beat that she feels like society has a double standard:

"I feel like I'm one of the biggest feminists in the world, because I tell women to not be scared of anything."

Kelly Clarkson

"No, I wouldn't say feminist, thats too strong. I think when people hear feminist, it's like, 'Get out of my way, I don't need anyone.' I love that I'm being taken care of and I have a man that's a leader. I'm not a feminist in that sense."

Stereotypes.

Stereotypes can be a dangerous word.

Only 13% of women fit the stereotype of being a stay at home mum.

False stereotypes today.

"People from the South (U.S.) are hicks, rednecks, poor, uneducated, have missing teeth, have no college education, are hillbillies, have no class, etc."

Stereotypes work to naturalise (to make seem natural).

Child Psychosexual Stage

Freud believes that as a child we pass through three different Psychosexual stages, Oral, Anal, and Phallic. If the child faces issues within each phase issues can carry through into adult hood.

Oral stage: Children gain comfort from breast-feeding.
Problems include over dependancy and oral fixations such a drinking, smoking, and nail biting.

Anal stage: Potty training, this is when children gain control over their bodies.
Problems include becoming explusive, wasteful and destructive.

Phallic stage: This is the last stage, where children (aged three to six) become aware of their own bodies and the bodies of others around them. Children become aware of the physics differences between females and males.
Problems include fixation on the Phallic stage, recklessness, self assuredness, and narcism. Children can also gain penis envy.

The Structure of the Mind

The unconscious. This is where fears needs and desires reside.

The pre conscious. This is where memories reside.

The conscious. This is where thoughts and perception reside.
